Jamie Beletz

Took over Gateways for Youth and Families along with his wife, Mel Curtiss. Served as a volunteer board member and interim paid president, and later became chairman of the board of the charity’s foundation. It’s unclear what his role is at this time. Also runs Innovial Inc., a public affairs consulting company, and is a licensed real estate agent.

Mel Curtiss

President of Gateways for Youth and Families. She previously was a volunteer board member and chairwoman of the charity’s foundation. She is a licensed attorney, children’s book author and former director of investigations and legislative liaison for the Washington state Board of Accountancy.

Vito Chiechi

Longtime Olympia lobbyist and owner of Mercury Direct Mail Services. A former Gateways board member claims Beletz received a commission from Mercury Direct for steering Gateways business to the company at the same time Beletz served on the Gateways board of directors.

James Bernier

Former Beletz business partner with Innovial. Beletz hired Bernier to write a grant application for Gateways. The grant was unsuccessful, and Beletz kept some of the fee for himself, Bernier said.

Kevin O’Sullivan

Gateways board member and former Thurston County commissioner. Beletz worked on O’Sullivan’s unsuccessful 2006 Thurston County commissioner campaign.

Tarie Barber

Former Gateways board member, Farmers Insurance agent and one-time girlfriend of Adam Ortega, a former business partner with Beletz in Innovial Inc. While serving on the Gateways board, Barber received a share of the commission from Gateways’ insurance, a former Gateways board member said.

Kevin Iverson

University Place accountant and former Gateways board member. He worked closely with Beletz to overhaul Gateways, but later became disillusioned with Beletz and left the charity.

Steve Downing

Tacoma attorney and former Gateways board member whose association with Gateways dates to the 1970s. Downing quit the board in frustration, saying Beletz and Curtiss had taken control.

John Bankston

Contractor and former Gateways board member who worked with Beletz on numerous business ventures, including a failed bid to take over control of Freedom Fair, Tacoma’s Fourth of July celebration.

Cory Manthou

Former Gateways board member and board chairman and son of Tacoma City Councilman Spiro Manthou. Beletz worked on the elder Manthou’s 2003 election campaign.

Sally Cofchin

Former Gateways board member and retired executive vice president of Bates Technical College. She left Gateways after Beletz rose in power, saying she disagreed with the charity’s direction.

Claude Carlson

Former Gateways president. He was forced out in 2004 after 16 years running the charity. Beletz took over as interim president, and Curtiss later became the permanent president.

Tim Reid

Metro Parks commissioner and operator of a human resources consulting company. He’s done HR work for the charity, including leading a cursory search for a new Gateways president that resulted in the hiring of Curtiss.

Kara Williams

Former real estate broker who briefly served as Gateways chairwoman despite a felony conviction. Williams shared offices with Beletz and Barber at two locations prior to joining the Gateways board.

Brian Hauer

Former Gateways board member and real estate broker. Hauer’s real estate license was suspended for eight years as part of a settlement this year with the state Department of Licensing. He was accused of more than a dozen charges of misconduct, including altering rental agreements, erasing names on agreements and interfering with an investigation of a property management company.

Clyde Kalahan

Former Gateways board member who said Curtiss’ selection as Gateways’ president was presented to the board of directors as a fait accompli.

Mike Sando

Gateways board member and longtime Beletz friend. Sando and Beletz worked together on campaigns, and Sando was partners with Beletz in the Washington Home Based Business Association.

Chris Beall

Federal Way Farmers Insurance agent who reportedly shared some of his commission from Gateways’ policy with former board member Barber, a Tacoma Farmers agent at the time.
