Bridge Update: Oct. 9, 2006

October 9, 2006

Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:

Tacoma Narrows Constructors is planning its most aggressive deck-lifting schedule yet this week.

If all goes well, crews will lift as many as seven deck sections off the transfer ship Teal and onto the main cables between today and the weekend. The deck sections will go onto the midspan and both side spans.

TNC has been making rapid progress since it moored the Teal under the Gig Harbor side of the bridge last Tuesday. A Sept. 29 attempt to park the ship failed after one of four winch anchor lines broke.

If the weather stays dry, road crews will finish paving work on the future eastbound lanes of Highway 16 as it leaves the new bridge on the Tacoma side. If it doesn’t rain, they’ll also stripe that new section of highway.

On the Gig Harbor side, road crews have finished paving the new onramp to the bridge from 24th Street and will start installing guardrails there this week.
