Bridge update: Oct. 15, 2006

October 15, 2006

Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:

Lots more heavy lifting this week on the bridge deck operation. Lifting crews plan to have three more deck sections off the delivery vessel the Teal and onto the main cable by the end of the week.

That will mean 26 of the 46 sections will have been hung on the main cables. Several won’t be in their final positions, however, and later will have to be “trapezed,” or moved horizontally into place.

The Swan, the ship that delivered the first 16 sections, is near the end of its voyage back to South Korea, where it will pick up the final 15 deck sections. The ship is expected to arrive in Tacoma with its load around the third week in November, depending on the weather and on how quickly the loading operation goes in Korea.

A couple of lane closures and traffic realignments to be aware of:

 • From 7 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday, eastbound Highway 16 will be reduced to one lane across the bridge. During the night, crews will move the two eastbound lanes south of their current location onto newly constructed permanent eastbound lanes that align with the new bridge.

 • From 10 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. next Sunday, bridge maintenance crews will close the right eastbound lane across the bridge to repair an expansion joint. Westbound traffic will not be affected.
