A Senate committee on Monday approved a bill that would set a $49 fine for failing to pay a toll on the new Narrows Bridge when it opens this summer.
Senate Bill 5391, sponsored by Sen. Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor, would set the basic fine at $40, all of which would go to Pierce County District Court.
It also would tack on a penalty equal to three times the amount of the toll. That portion of the fine would go into the bridge account and would be used to help pay off loans for the $849 million project.
With the initial toll of $3, the fine would be $9.
The Senate Transportation Committee sent the bill to the rules committee, where it awaits action by the full Senate.
