Free parent education workshop set for today in Kennewick

The Children's Reading Foundation of the Mid-Columbia is sponsoring a series of free parent education workshops. Parents who attend five of the six sessions are eligible for a free book each month for the next five years from the Dolly Imagination Library.

Starting today, English classes will be offered at 10 a.m. at the Mid-Columbia Libraries' Keewaydin branch, 405 S. Dayton St. in Kennewick or 6 p.m. at the Children's Development Center, 1549 Georgia Ave. S.E., Richland.

Starting Thursday, Spanish classes will be offered at 1 p.m. at the Mid-Columbia Libraries' Pasco branch, 1320 W. Hopkins St., Pasco.

    Kyle Cox, executive director of Mid-Columbia Libraries, has been named to the Library Council of Washington by Secretary of State Sam Reed.

    The council was formed to promote access to library and information resources for Washington citizens and has an advisory role, according to a release on the library district's website.

    Cox will represent public libraries serving more than 100,000 people.

  • Journalism group offering movie showing

    The William O. Douglas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will have a free showing of the documentary Searching for Debra Winger at 7 p.m. today in Kennewick.

    The film was directed by actress Rosanna Arquette and explores the pressures women face working in the film industry, particularly as they age.

    The movie will be shown at the Kennewick branch of the Mid-Columbia Libraries, 1620 S. Union St.

  • Digital newstand service available at libraries

    Patrons of the Mid-Columbia Libraries and Richland Public Library now have access to dozens of popular magazines through their new digital newstand service Zinio.

    The magazines can be downloaded to a number of internet-enabled devices, from Kindles to iPads to desktop computers. There is no wait list to view the magazines and no holds, and the service does not cost patrons anything to use.

    One hundred titles are available to Mid-Columbia Libraries patrons while 94 magazines will be available through the Richland Public Library.
