Appalling that state failed to protect girl

Re: The young girl who endured years of horrific torture (TNT, 6-24).

Articles like this are heartbreaking. I can’t recall my dad ever raising his voice at us kids. Of course, mom yelled because we drove her nuts.

My husband and I considered becoming foster parents, wanting to give a child a safe, loving and nurturing home. According to the state, we were “too old,” yet the state Department of Social and Health Services licensed Chornice Lewis and paid her more than $100,000.

I am appalled that this young girl endured such cruelty. Child Protective Services had been notified over and over again of concerns for her welfare from her schools and neighbors. When these concerns were investigated, the “social workers” stated that she was a liar and that the complaints were unfounded.

Once again, no one at DSHS is being held accountable. It’s the same old story: There was a breakdown in the system or their caseloads are too heavy.

When the state reviewed this case it stated, “Child Protective investigators and DSHS social workers should be trained in the detection of patterns in child abuse and neglect cases.” To me it comes down to: “Protect those who can’t protect themselves.”
