Tacoma Narrows Constructors plans a flurry of last-minute road work in preparation for the July 15 opening of the new Tacoma Narrows bridge.
Final paving and striping will require several nighttime lane closures on both sides of the bridge. Drivers are advised to expect delays and postpone trips.
Watch for these closures:
• One lane of eastbound Highway 16 in the toll plaza area and eastbound 36th Street exit from 8 p.m. today to 8 a.m. Sunday, and from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.
• One lane of westbound Highway 16 at the east end of the bridge from 10 p.m. today to 9 a.m. Sunday, and from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday.
• One lane of westbound Highway 16 between the Gig Harbor weigh station and Olympic Drive from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.
• One lane of westbound 16 between the pedestrian overpass and the east end of the bridge from 9 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday.
Next week, the State Department of Transportation will switch on several sets of ramp meter signals along eastbound Highway 16 in Tacoma so engineers can test the new system.
Metering signals at Jackson and Union avenues and at Pearl, Orchard and Center streets will be on during off-peak hours Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thursday and Friday they’ll be on during peak traffic hours.
