  Puyallup deserves a better mayor than Councilmember Rick Hansen One of the many duties of a city mayor is to represent its citizens at events that honor those who gave their lives in foreign wars. It is a very special duty of a city mayor. It now appears that the Puyallup City Council will appoint Rick Hansen as its new mayor in January. This is the same Hansen who falsely claimed to be a Vietnam War Veteran in his most recent biography in the state Voters Pamphlet. Hansen is fortunate that Puyallup is not in the State of Oregon, as Oregon prosecutes such “official” false claims as a felony. Hansen has consistently shrugged off this matter as a semantics issue. Tell that to the families of the 58,000 who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War. If the new Puyallup City Council wishes to insult the public by appointing Hansen as its mayor, the mayoral duties at events honoring veterans should be delegated to an individual with integrity.   Government in Puyallup doesn’t have to change for vote for city mayor Mr. Steven Shores shared his concerns (Herald letters, Jan. 18) regarding discussions of electing a mayor in Puyallup. Whether you agree with the current process of appointment by seniority or election by the citizens, it is important that the information you have is accurate. Shores stated that the current process of mayor by seniority was “used since Feb. 4, 1980.” That is inaccurate. The rules were changed in 1996 with council member Martin becoming the first mayor appointed by seniority. At that time, both council members Marc Brouillet and Turner spoke against the change but were in the minority. Shores suggests that council member Knutsen asked Turner to pass the gavel down. Not accurate; Knutsen requested that she pass the gavel to Hansen, who was not the next in line in seniority. It was not about passing the gavel, it was about passing the gavel to whom he wanted as mayor. He requested then to change the rules to vote for
