A draft today may keep us out of Iran tomorrow
Last updated: November 7th, 2007 01:18 AM (PST)

The Democratic Congress should propose a bill to reinstate the National Military Conscription Act (the draft). If you think you saw a lot of war protesters in New York, San Francisco and Seattle last week, that would be a drop in the bucket compared to what you could expect should Congress take this initiative.

Excepting an increase in gas prices, the great majority of the American people have not even been inconvenienced by this war, much less made to sacrifice for its prosecution. And anyway, won’t the war with Iran require sizable troop increase for our military?

I firmly believe that if we had had a draft in place five years ago we would not be in Iraq today. If we start a draft now it may keep us out of Iran tomorrow (or Syria, North Korea or maybe Venezuela).
