How dare first lady berate Myanmar officials

After all these years, Laura Bush chose the Myanmar disaster to emerge? Standing in the White House press room Monday, she berated the government of Myanmar for not allowing foreign aid and for not warning its citizens of the imminent danger. She did it all with conviction and a straight face.

Perhaps she wasn’t home in August 2005 when Americans were not warned strongly enough that a hurricane was coming toward the Gulf Coast. Perhaps she was somewhere else when FEMA refused foreign aid to the people who were hurt and homeless in areas hit hard by Katrina. She probably wasn’t aware of the hospital ships, money and water supplies sent by Mexico and other concerned neighbors that were turned away.

How dare she speak to the government officials of Myanmar about how they govern? She should be embarrassed.

She should have prefaced her conference with the words: “I hope that the government of Myanmar will learn from our mistakes. God knows we haven’t!”
