Driving slower better than taking a gas-tax holiday

Re: “Cheaper at slower speeds” (TNT, 5-8).

Wouldn’t it be great to show off our patriotism by driving 55 to 60 mph? This would decrease demand for oil and put more money in our pockets.

What a simple way to do our part in the war on terror. It involves no wiretapping, warring or loss of life. It does, however, reduce our reliance on the foreign oil that we aren’t fighting to protect in the Middle East. Our gas-tax holiday proponents should be telling us to drive slower, not give us a reason to maintain our habitual oil consumption.

A 55 or 60 mph speed limit isn’t far-fetched. It was done in the 1970s when gas and oil were also at record highs. It seems like an easy sacrifice to make in a time of war.
