Seattle jewelry maker earns $10,000 Artist Trust award

Artist Trust, a nonprofit organization supporting artists in Washington, has announced jewelry maker Mary Lee Hu as the eighth recipient of the Irving and Yvonne Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
The award presents $10,000 annually to a female visual artist in Washington, age 60 or older, who has practiced art for a large portion of her life, achieving professional and artistic excellence.
Hu is a Seattle artist and professor at the University of Washington who explores basketry and ethnic techniques in high-carat gold. Her work is in several collections, including the Renwick Gallery, Art Institute of Chicago, and Victoria and Albert Museum.
The Twining Humber Award was established through a gift from the late Yvonne Twining Humber to the Artist Trust Endowment Fund. Previous recipients include Mary Randlett, Patti Warashina and Elizabeth Sandvig.
