You can bring home a touch of ‘Mad Men’

THE NEWS TRIBUNE

Raise a glass, a stylish glass, to Don Draper.

The main character of AMC’s “Mad Men” drinks from sterling-silver banded glassware that he keeps inside his Manhattan Avenue office. Draper, played by Jon Hamm, is creative director of the fictional Sterling Cooper ad agency in the early 1960s.

The roly-poly crystal glasses Draper sips from were designed by Dorothy Carpenter Thorpe (1904-1989), a Los Angeles-based artist. Thorpe designed other sterling-edged entertaining ware such as cocktail pitchers and cheese domes.

Buying tip: Search “Dorothy Thorpe” and “Eames” (another designer whose name has become a search term for all things midcentury modern) on www.ebay.com. A set of four cocktail glasses in good condition, similar to these shown, recently went for $15. Pitchers have sold for about $40.

The ultra-chic “Mad Men” was recently nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. For more information on the show, go to www.amctv.com/ originals/madmen.
