Washington State University President Elson Floyd said the university would be forced to cut at least 400 to 500 jobs under legislative budget plans announced this week.

Student enrollment would also be cut by 1,500 students under the lawmakers’ proposals.

The Moscow-Pullman Daily News said the university expects significant tuition increases to be unavoidable.

The House budget proposal calls for cuts of about 29 percent or more than $151 million for the state’s 2009-2011 biennial budget. The Senate calls for a 20 percent cut.

The governor’s budget talked about a 12 percent cut, but her estimates were made before recent revenue forecasts predicting a shortfall of about $9 billion in the next biennium.
