Alex Nielsen of University Place is one of two American students who will represent his country at an event in Italy next month connected to the G-8 Summit of the world’s most powerful leaders.

Nielsen, who’s finishing his freshman year at Charles Wright Academy, will join 20 other international students in Italy to draft a document describing for the leaders, including President Barack Obama, what they believe their younger generation would wish the world to look like.

The students will present their proposal to the spouses of the world leaders on July 10 and may have a chance to meet the leaders themselves at the conference.

The program was created by UNICEF, Rotary International and the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians. Nielsen was nominated by the fellowship’s Puget Sound Fleet.

This is shaping up to be a busy summer for Nielsen. He’s also competing this month in National History Day at the University of Maryland, where he and classmate Koby Deitz will give a presentation about Harlem Globetrotters founder Abe Saperstein. The boys were previously featured in The News Tribune.
