A Bellarmine Preparatory School student recently came home from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a special award and a four-year college “genius scholarship” valued at nearly $100,000.

Max Breitenbach and fellow Bellarmine senior Matt Fruge attended the Intel event in Reno last month after winning the top team project at the Washington state science fair. Their project, which analyzed tidal and water temperature patterns as precursors for red tide, caught the eyes of judges at the international contest.

Breitenbach, 17, was awarded a full-tuition genius scholarship from Sierra Nevada College, Lake Tahoe, Nev., offered to select finalists in the environmental science and computer science fields. It is valued at $23,000 per year for four years

Fruge, 18, opted out of consideration because he has plans to attend the Air Force Academy.

All told, Washington state students had their best year in 50 years at the international competition, taking home three grand awards and three special awards, according to Gary Foss, associate technical fellow with The Boeing Co.
