TACOMA: Where's emphasis on student achievement?

It is comforting to know that the Tacoma School Board is pleased with Superintendent Art Jarvis’ performance (editorial, 6-26). Apparently, he has managed to address some long-standing issues facing the district. However, we somehow missed these accomplishments; our son was left behind in its quest to increase all but effective learning in the schools.

As a very bright special education student, he was continually passed through the system, culminating in an educational level of eighth grade at the time of his graduation. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find placement for a college-bound student who performs at middle school level.

His future success, in large part, will be determined by what we have battled and fought for and not as a consequence of any great effort supplied by Tacoma public schools. They need to recheck or rewrite their mission statement.
