SOTOMAYOR: Questioners have unreal expectations

After listening to the confirmation hearings on TV and reading The News Tribune regarding the questioning of Sonia Sotomayor in her bid for appointment to the Supreme Court, it seems apparent that some of the senators on the Judicial Committee would have us believe only those bereft of empathy and able to ignore their life experiences in making judgments are qualified to be judges.

These qualifications, as Kathleen Parker points out (column, 7-15), could only apply to a robot.

So in this vetting process, some on the Judicial Committee are forcing candidates to equivocate on their answers to fit the warped prejudices of those few senators who not only want justice to be blind but to adhere to criteria they have set that human beings do not possess: ignoring life experiences and personal empathy. It would seem that they want justice to be both blind and stupid.
