Why is Tacoma building bicycle lanes and roundabouts at the expense of our crumbling streets and increased traffic congestion?
With a severe scarcity of funds to repair the thousands of our legendary potholes or to widen choked thoroughfares, I find it incredible that the city can find the money to convert a busy, four- lane arterial to two lanes, with a new bicycle lane in each direction.
North 21st Street between Alder and Proctor is a recent and perfect example of this lunacy and misappropriation of funds. I have nothing against bicycles and often ride one myself, but this section of North 21st sees thousands of cars each day while the average number of bikes seen per day on this busy street can be counted on one hand.
Is this a prudent way to spend our hard-earned tax dollars? I think not.
