TACOMA: Merritt shows he has what city needs

Re: Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy withdrawing support for Tacoma mayoral candidate Jim Merritt

Thank you for your report about Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy withdrawing her support of Tacoma mayoral candidate Jim Merritt because he made a stand against Sound Transit’s plan (and by default against McCarthy herself) to use earthen berms as opposed to post-and-beam construction (TNT, 8-19).

This is such a blatant example of the “good ol’ boy” system that’s apparently still alive and well in Tacoma.

Most citizens knowledgeable about the post-and-beam structure, and Merritt’s visionary approach to negotiating solutions, applaud him for his assertion for what is right for Tacoma. The conviction that Merritt shows by sticking to his guns reveals his genuine care for the city.

We don’t need another “loyal follower” for our next mayor. How refreshing it is to have a mayoral candidate who is not afraid to state his opinion, speak out on his vision for our city and have the courage to not be pressured into an apology for publicly challenging the design of Sound Transit’s commuter rail extension.
