Re: “The Tacoma Way of insider politics mounting comeback at public’s expense” (Peter Callaghan column, 8-20).
Cost-cutting measures are obviously in effect as we see the daily paper shrink to a daily news sheet. Now we are treated to the intellectual bankruptcy of Callaghan in his opinion piece regarding his perceived “Tacoma Way.”
In creating out of whole cloth the feared “insider way,” Callaghan tears open the scars of the David Brame scandal for our community and then compares our local leaders to those in North Korea.
This is an obvious attempt to beat your editorial board in endorsement of one mayoral candidate over another. Somehow, Callaghan’s opinion piece must have avoided editorial review prior to publication.
Your entire editorial board should review Callaghan’s piece and take the obvious action of issuing an apology to the citizens of Tacoma and our local leaders for the egregious comments noted.
Contrary to Callaghan’s assertions, the issue involving Sound Transit’s elevated tracks have been openly and publicly discussed. I know, because I read about it in The News Tribune.
References to Brame and the fascist dictatorship of North Korea are quite beyond the pale. I would suggest upholding the integrity and professionalism of your paper would be a good strategy for long-term viability.
