Brian Redman, a staple of Tacoma’s music scene, was killed in a scooter crash early Sunday morning. He was 31.
Redman was known as leader of Tacoma hard-rock band Dirty Knockers, and for his two-year stint with popular Vancouver, B.C.-based thrash-metal outfit 3 Inches of Blood, among other projects. He last performed with Dirty Knockers on Saturday night at Tacoma’s New Frontier Lounge.
“He was everybody’s friend,” said Ken “Flash” Connel, who booked Redman’s bands at Tacoma’s Hell’s Kitchen. “I’m blown away by how many different facets of Tacoma were in love with that guy.”
The Pierce County Medical Examiner confirmed Redman’s death. Detective Brad Graham of the Tacoma Police Department said Redman was thrown from his scooter after apparently clipping a curb in the 2400 block of North 21st Street.
After the accident, friends and admirers left flowers, Elysian beer bottles and a red bandanna – like one Redman often wore – on and around a utility pole he is believed to have struck.
“He was a denim demon,” read a message, scrawled directly onto the wood.
Redman worked as a bartender at Doyle’s Public House, 208 St. Helen’s Ave., in Tacoma. The venue will host a tribute concert in his honor Friday, with proceeds going toward funeral arrangements, said owner Russ Heaton.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. with music starting at 8; call 253-272-7468 for further details.
