Washington is one of eight states getting federal dollars to help boost the reading skills of adolescents. State education officials announced Tuesday that Washington would be getting a $4.4 million, four-year grant to work with six middle schools to start a program to get all kids reading at grade level.

The middle schools all have 75 or more students reading at least two grades below grade level. They are Cascade and Olympic in the Auburn School District, Cedarcrest and Spanaway in the Bethel School District, Perry G. Keithley in the Franklin Pierce district, and Grandview in Grandview.

The project will focus on a reading program that targets decoding – making letters and sounds into words – vocabulary and comprehension.
