That was an interesting article on the flu shots that were administered during the Homeless Connect event at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Center (TNT, 10-15). However, it left out some important information.
The flu shot clinic was organized and operated, as it has been for the last three years, by the volunteers of the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), which is sponsored by the Pierce County Health Department.
All of the volunteer nursing students from Pacific Lutheran University are members of the MRC, an organization trained and ready to respond to any medical emergency in Pierce County and elsewhere when the need arises.
The volunteers are physicians, registered nurses, pharmacists and other medical and nonmedical folks living in and around Pierce County who want to give something back to our community.
The MRC is trained to respond to a major disasters by setting up mobile medical facilities to provide needed patient care for county residents. We are also involved in potentially serious disease outbreaks, like the swine flu, and we will be providing all the staffing for several vaccination clinics scheduled for the next couple of months.
Anyone interested in joining this great organization can contact the Pierce County Health Department. A medical background is not necessary. (Edmunds is a member of the MRC leadership council.)
