I work every day with women and children fleeing domestic violence. My work at the YWCA has taught me that all that matters in a relationship is love.
Before many of the children we serve come to our shelter, they lived with a mother and a father; a father who aggressively abused their mother and often them as well.
The opposition to Referendum 71 is using the slogan “Protect children.” Protecting children means raising them in a nurturing and loving environment. This can be achieved by single parents, gay and lesbian parents or heterosexual parents.
Our hope for a better world is to promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. That is our mission at the YWCA. Voting to Approve R-71 will help achieve this goal. (Barnett is executive director of YWCA Pierce County.)
