Kate Hudson and Minka Kelly gave their boyfriends’ World Series opener some sparkle.
Hudson was sitting with her mother Goldie Hawn’s longtime companion Kurt Russell, star of the cult classic “Escape from New York,” to cheer on Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.
Kelly, of “Friday Night Lights,” was in captain Derek Jeter’s suite as New York and the Philadelphia Phillies played Game 1 at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night.
Alec Baldwin, Matthew McConaughey, Jeff Gordon, former New York Rangers captain Mark Messier, ex-Homeland Security head Tom Ridge and movie directors Spike Lee and Steven Spielberg were also spotted in the high-priced seats near home plate for the Yankees’ first Series game in six years.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was in his front row seat next to the Yankees dugout along the first-base line.
Giuliani, a fixture at Yankees games since the championship run during the 1990s, knows why a baseball game in the Bronx brings out the boldface names.
“New York’s the capital of the world,” Giuliani said while standing on the field before the game.
Playing the first Fall Classic in the $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium brought out the Hollywood celebrities that take a sporting event into the style pages, but the biggest fuss was made for first lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, the wife of tghe vice president, who participated in the pregame ceremonies to honor U.S. war veterans.
Secret Service agents set up metal detectors for the fans entering the deluxe Legends Suite entrance, snipers were posted on top of the video board in center field and trench-coat clad servicemen lined the front rows during warmups.
‘Boss’ returns to stadium
George Steinbrenner watched Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night from his suite above home plate, returning to the new Yankee Stadium for the first time since opening day.
Steinbrenner arrived about 45 minutes before the first pitch and was driven in a dark minivan with tinted windows all the way to the elevators that lead up the suites.
The frail owner, who has made few public appearances since his health deteriorated, was helped out of his car and into a wheelchair in the stadium tunnel. General manager Brian Cashman then accompanied him on the elevator trip to his box.
Steinbrenner has kept a low profile since turning over the day-to-day operation of the team to his son, Hal, in November.

The Yankees added right-handed reliever Brian Bruney and utilityman Eric Hinske to their World Series roster and dropped pinch-runner Freddy Guzman and catcher Francisco Cervelli. ... Phillies pitcher Pedro Martinez says he regrets tossing Don Zimmer, then a Yankees coach, to the ground during a bench-clearing brawl in the playoffs six years ago while he was Boston. ... Yankees broadcaster Suzyn Waldman has become the first woman to call a World Series game on the radio. Waldman was on WCBS-AM in New York. ... Former sports agent Dennis Gilbert is the third potential new owner to meet with officials of the Texas Rangers.
