As I ponder the reactions of the opposition to Referendum 71, I recollect the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as he was writing from jail in Birmingham:
“An unjust law is a code that a numerical or power majority group compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on itself. A just law is a code that a majority compels a minority to follow and that it is willing to follow itself.”
He was speaking about civil rights. Those who oppose equal rights in any context only perpetuate a very destructive way of thinking.
