R-71: Being gay isn’t a fashion statement

DAVID BATES; Tacoma

Re: “Don’t be swayed by guilt trip arguments” (letter, 10-9).

The writer dresses down gay and lesbianism as though it is a fashion statement, as if someone can discard the core of whom they are as easily as they drop their shirt in the secondhand collection bin.

Like it or not, same-sex relationships have been around since the beginnings of civilization, outlasting all fashion trends.

Those who are spewing hate and intolerance should get to know someone who is gay or lesbian to find out just how good our lives have been in comparison. I would put my heterosexual life in the hands of any one of my gay or lesbian friends in a heartbeat.

For all the internal and external suffering they have gone through, granting them benefits is the least we can do.
