MEMORIALS: Get rid of roadside clutter
Last updated: November 2nd, 2009 12:22 AM (PST)

I am neither callous nor unsympathetic to those suffering with the loss of a loved one. I lost my own younger brother in an accident when he was just 17.

That being said, the time has come to clean up the roadside memorials prevalent in our county. At best they are a distraction and at worst a pile of litter nobody wants to disturb for fear of offending a grieving family.

There are ragged stuffed animals, crosses, glass picture frames, plastic flowers, signs, and candles ad nauseam at so many places where a tragic accident has occurred.

While I sympathize with the loss of family or friends, a more appropriate memorial needs to be considered. Plant a memorial tree, donate to a cause/charity or send flowers in the loved one’s name to a senior home.
