ENERGY: Nation can’t continue to punt on issue of nuclear waste

Re: “Nuclear power better than ever and important part of mix” (Viewpoint, 11-6).

Michael Fox makes many compelling and important points regarding nuclear energy, yet he made no mention of a significant one, perhaps the most significant one – nuclear waste. Until a long-term plan is put into effect, I don’t see how we can seriously contemplate building more plants despite the many benefits nuclear power offers.

For too long, we have treated nuclear waste as more of a political issue than a scientific or environmental one. Powerful politicians (Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada chief among them) are able to keep the waste out of their backyards, but we can’t avoid action forever.
