R-71: Don’t legitimize anti-gay bigotry

REV. MONTY SMITH; Tacoma

Re: “As Christians, we paid a price for fighting R-71” (Viewpoint, 11-11).

Christians won, not lost, with the passage of Referendum 71.

Rev. Joe Fuiten’s hand-wringing is misplaced. A homophobic god who seeks to keep loving partners apart exists only in the imaginations of fearful people. Authentic Christianity grieves with others over the inhumanity of war, destruction of the environment, loss of species, pain of poverty, waste of government and inadequate education. We know in Christianity that “God is love.” R-71 is a celebration of that love.

It is disturbing to me that The News Tribune legitimizes bigotry by printing it under the banner of religious “viewpoint” and thereby remains complicit in perpetuating violence in our community. I hope others are disturbed, too. (Smith is the pastor at Browns Point United Methodist Church.)
