Re: “Beach access is dandy, but what about a lahar escape route?” (letter, 11-10).
This letter clearly indicates what is causing the financial crisis in all levels of government. The writer obviously feels that building a bridge over railroad tracks that carry several trains each day is less important than building a bridge over the Carbon River which most likely will never be used for its intended purpose of lahar evacuation.
If the children of the Orting school worry each day that they may be overrun by a lahar, it is only because of alarmist statements by people such as the letter writer. Obviously the residents of Orting do not share her concern. Orting has experienced significant growth in recent years; if these people were concerned, they would not have moved their families to Orting.
I do agree with one sentence in her letter: “Come on folks, where are our priorities?” With all levels of government in financial distress and unemployment at very high levels, our priorities should be to take care of the basics and not ask the government to take on additional projects. If the people living in Orting feel strongly about this project, they will raise the $2.8 million and not ask the county, state, and federal governments to finance the bridge.
