Because of technical issues, the staff at Mount Rainier National Park has extended the deadline for comment on plans to rehab and rebuild the road to Paradise.

Park staff has begun developing an environmental assessment to gauge the effect of work to be done on the 17.6-mile road from the Nisqually entrance to Paradise. The work is expected to begin in 2012. The estimated is approximately $32.7 million.

The final environmental assessment is expected to be released for public comment in May.

The deadline is now Dec. 5.

You can comment by writing to: Superintendent, Mount Rainier National Park, 55210 238th Ave. E., Ashford, WA 98304; or online at parkplanning.nps.gov, then choosing Mount Rainier National Park from the drop down menu.

October visitation decline: Park visitation dropped significantly last month compared to 2008. There were 65,988 visitors in October, down 15.3 percent from the same month last year.

October’s numbers brought visitation for the year to 1,098,455, up just .6 percent from last year.
