Robert Sacre scored 14 points and Gonzaga won the Maui Invitational for the first time in three tries, beating Cincinnati, 61-59 in overtime, on Wednesday night at the Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Steven Gray and Elias Harris added 13 points apiece for Gonzaga (5-1).
The Bulldogs, who also got 12 points from Demetri Goodson, overcame a 10-point second-half deficit and sent the game to overtime after Sacre hit a floater in the lane with 16 seconds left in regulation. Sacre then blocked Cincinnati’s alley-oop try at the buzzer.
The Bearcats (4-1) looked weary in overtime, missing five of seven free throws in the first 1:45 while falling behind by two.
Yancy Gates, who had 11 points, had a putback dunk with 12.6 seconds to go to bring the Bearcats within one, but Cashmere Wright missed a floater as time expired.
UCLA player reinstated
UCLA reinstated Nikola Dragovic Wednesday after the Serbian forward’s two-game suspension for his arrest in an assault case.
Coach Ben Howland cleared the 21-year-old senior to practice with the Bruins and said he’ll play in today’s 76 Classic opener in Anaheim against Portland.
Dragovic, the Bruins’ only returning starter this fall, hasn’t been practicing with the Bruins since he was suspended last Friday. He missed games against Cal State Bakersfield and Pepperdine.
Men’s highlights
No. 5 Kentucky 73, Stanford 65 (OT): Freshman sensation John Wall scored 23 points, including clutch shots that sent the game to overtime, and Kentucky closed with an eight-point run in the championship game of the Cancun Challenge in Mexico.
Wall hit a 12-foot fadeaway jumper from the right wing to tie the score at 61 with 30.6 seconds remaining in regulation, then two free throws with 2.4 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Landry Fields scored 23 points to lead Stanford (3-3).
No. 7 Duke 64, Arizona State 53: Jon Scheyer had 16 points and six assists, and Duke used a 19-3 second-half run to take control in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York.
Nolan Smith had 14 points and Kyle Singler added 13 for Duke (5-0), which led by only four points at halftime.
The Sun Devils (4-1), who tied it at 43 on two free throws by Derek Glasser with 13:11 to play, got 13 points each from Glasser and Trent Lockett.
No. 24 Vanderbilt 84, Arizona 72: A.J. Ogilvy scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Jermaine Beal added 18 points and five assists to lead Vanderbilt (4-1) to victory in the fifth-place game of the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Arizona (3-2) was led by Solomon Hill’s 17 points and Kyle Fogg’s 10. Nic Wise, coming off a 30-point effort in an overtime win over Colorado, was limited to nine points against Vanderbilt.
At No. 1 Kansas 89, Oakland, Mich. 59: Marcus Morris and Xavier Henry each scored 19 points as Kansas stretched the nation’s longest home-court winning streak to 44 games.
Pacific 71, San Diego State 63: Terrell Smith had 16 points and five rebounds to lead Pacific to a victory in the West Coast Classic.
The Tigers (4-0) won their third straight game in the round-robin tournament in Stockton, Calif.
Women’s highlights
At UCLA 69, Princeton 59: Markel Walker had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Moniquee Alexander added 15 points and 11 boards to lead UCLA.
At No. 3 Ohio State 89, UNC Greensboro 56: Jantel Lavender scored 27 points for Ohio State, stretching her double-figures scoring streak to 72 games.
