Re: “Don’t give federal government control” (letter, 11-23).
The writer is obviously not in favor of government involvement in education. The education establishment probably feels likewise. And yet the states ask for federal funds. Seems the feds have an obligation to oversee what and how those funds are used.
Without federal involvement, some Southern schools might still be segregated, and as was the case in Louisiana years ago, when textbooks were provided only for the white kids and the white schools. Setting standards is not a bad thing if those who set those standards fully understand the problems of the classroom. Sadly, many do not.
Oversight and control are not always bad. If the government were to have had some oversight and control of the banks and greedy mortgage giants in the past few years, we may not have been in the mess we are now.
