Sumner official takes job in Tumwater

Sumner’s city administrator has accepted a similar position with the larger city of Tumwater, just south of Olympia, officials from both cities announced Wednesday.
John Doan, who has worked various jobs at Sumner City Hall for 18 years, will begin his new position Jan. 26, according to a Sumner press release.
Doan was deputy city administrator in the East Pierce city before his promotion in April 2005. He replaced Andrew Neiditz, who left Sumner to become city manager in Lakewood.
“Sumner is a very tight-knit community, and I have so enjoyed being welcomed as part of that community while having the opportunity to help Sumner shape its future,” Doan said in a statement released by Sumner.
Sumner has a strong mayor form of government. Doan, who lives in Puyallup, has run Sumner’s day-to-day operations and managed a staff of 115 under the watch of elected Mayor Dave Enslow.
Tumwater has a population of nearly 16,700, compared to Sumner’s 9,000. The base salary range advertised for the Tumwater job was between $120,924 to $134,364 a year. Enslow said Wednesday night he didn’t have Doan’s current salary handy, but he thought Doan would get a raise in Tumwater.
Doan will replace Tumwater City Administrator Doug Baker, who is retiring this month.
Enslow said he had just received Doan’s notice on Tuesday, so he has yet to formulate a replacement process.
