SENIOR CITIZENS: Let's bring generations together

With all the talk and media coverage regarding President Obama’s health care proposal, I think it’s time we started listening to each other in Pierce County.

With all the talk and media coverage regarding President Obama’s health care proposal, I think it’s time we started listening to each other in Pierce County.

I am working on a project for my American Government class at Bellarmine Prep. Three classmates and I are trying to promote “Intergeneration Day” in Tacoma in order to encourage connection and conversation between the youth of our community and older generations.

The attitude of our population is that once people have stopped being “useful,” they no longer have a place in our society. We are a society focused on production, so anything that might slow that process down is discarded.

Senior citizens need to be recognized for what they have contributed, and their story should be heard. We need a community dialogue – bringing generations of citizens together to listen, share experiences, and imagine new ways of taking care of each other.

It is people who ultimately take care of people, not government policies. An “Intergenerational Day” would celebrate the value of each generation and hopefully bring us together in new ways.
