The Seattle Mariners have signed free agent first baseman Ryan Garko to a one-year contract.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed, per club policy, but it's reported to be worth $550,000 with incentives potentially increasing that total to $1,075,000.
Garko split last season between Cleveland and San Francisco, which acquired him from the Indians in late July. But in 40 games with the Giants, he hit just .235 with two homers and 12 runs batted in. Only six of his 27 hits with San Francisco were for extra bases.
In 118 combined games in 2009, he hit .268 with 13 home runs and 51 runs batted in, with a .344 on-base percentage.
The 29-year-old owns a .279 lifetime average and .351 OBP in 448 games over five seasons with the Indians and Giants. Garko has also hit 55 homers and driven in 247. In addition to first base, Garko has also spent time as a designated hitter and in both corner outfield spots.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Mariners designated pitcher Gaby Hernandez for assignment.
