Tacoma firefighter files to run in District 1 race

THE NEWS TRIBUNE

Longtime Tacoma firefighter and union leader Pat McElligott has filed to run for Pierce County Council’s District 1 seat this fall.

McElligott, an Orting Democrat, will seek to replace Councilman Shawn Bunney, R-Lake Tapps, who cannot run again because of term limits.

McElligott spent 19 years as president of the Tacoma Professional Firefighters Union before stepping down from the post in 2008. The union is a potent force in city politics.

McElligott is the first candidate to file for the District 1 council seat. State Rep. Dan Roach, R-Bonney Lake, also is expected to run for the seat.
