POLITICS: League marking 90 years of service
MARY M. WATSON; Gig Harbor
The League of Women Voters celebrates its 90th birthday this year. It is an amazing group, really one of a kind. It needs to be better known and its resources widely used.
The league is unique among political organizations for being completely nonpartisan and without any agenda except informing and encouraging active participation in government. I see its greatest claim to fame as the intensive study given to any issue before a stand or any action is taken.
Forget the creaky name which screams boredom and stuffiness.
Do not laugh at the fashion show featured for its birthday celebration. It can be seen as a symbol of the changes, not only in women’s lives, but in opportunities for having a voice in public policy.
Check out the Web site (
www.lwvwa.org). Click on Positions. Hours and years of dedicated study and discussion have gone into each one. You will not find inflated egos here, or power plays or attacks on the integrity of others. Just using the site to research government issues you don’t understand will be of great benefit.
At the birthday celebration Sunday, we will eat, drink and watch merrily as 90 years of beauty, both without and within, pass by.
The best birthday present we could give is recognition and attention to the League of Women Voters, an amazing group indeed.
