Legislature OKs ban on bisphenol A
Last updated: March 9th, 2010 07:30 AM (PST)

The Legislature has approved a statewide ban on the chemical bisphenol A found in plastic baby bottles and other containers.

On a 38-9 vote Monday, the Senate concurred with changes made by the House that includes sports water bottles made with the chemical under the ban.

The measure also bans food and drink containers made with BPA if they’re intended for children under age 3. If signed into law by Gov. Chris Gregoire, the ban on children’s containers would go into effect July 1, 2011, and the ban on sports bottles would take effect July 1, 2012.

Connecticut and Minnesota passed similar laws last year. Last week, Wisconsin’s governor signed into a law a ban on the chemical from baby bottles and children’s cups.
