State Parks director Rex Derr plans to retire Nov. 30, according to a news release from the agency.
Derr, 61, said he and his wife, Anne, want to spend time with their children and grandchildren. He said he announced his plans Tuesday at the State Parks headquarters in Olympia to give the commission time to hire a new director.
Derr served 33 years with Washington State Parks, according to the news release. He also is a former Olympia mayor and was Thurston County’s 2000 Citizen of the Year.
The commission will discuss recruiting a new director and will work on a transition plan, the release states.
