Pierce County Deputy Prosecutor Kevin McCann has announced his campaign for District Court judge.

McCann, leader of the prosecutor’s felony property crimes unit, has been with the office for 15 years. He’ll run for the Position 2 District Court seat currently held by Judge David Kenworthy, who is retiring.

In a news release announcing his candidacy, McCann said he’s running to “restore the public’s trust in our judges and save taxpayer money by reducing case backlog as I did in the prosecutor’s office.”

“Pierce County has suffered too many embarrassments by public officials whose behavior has resulted in admonishments, a loss of the public’s faith and even criminal charges,” McCann said.

That appears to be a reference to former Superior Court Judge Michael Hecht, who resigned last year after he was convicted of felony harassment and paying a man for sex.
