Paddle opens Challenge
THE NEWS TRIBUNE
The 2010 Puget Sound Challenge gets under way Saturday with a kickoff paddle.
The challenge is not a race but a series of paddles to raise awareness and money in support of Washington’s water trails, and particularly the work of the Washington Water Trails Association and the North Kitsap Trails Association’s “North Kitsap’s String of Pearls” water trail.
The event consists of 13 separate segments of a 150-nautical mile paddle from Fort Worden in Port Townsend to Olympia and then to Allyn.
The idea is to complete the entire course in one year or season. The Olympic Kayak Club has scheduled group paddles for all 13 segments, April through October, and everyone is welcome to participate. Saturday’s paddle begins at Fort Worden at 10 a.m. and will cover 12 nautical miles to Jefferson Park.
