Your editorial (TNT, 4-8) regarding the frightening proliferation of threats against public servants and Leonard Pitts Jr.’s column (“Jesus wouldn’t recognize these ‘Christians’”) illustrated the dangerous climate being fomented by the right through irresponsible and inflammatory rhetoric.
I thank The News Tribune editorial board for reminding us that we live in a representative democracy and that elections do matter. What is particularly frightening, however, is the sampling of comments in response to your editorial (Readers’ Web Chat, 4-9).
All four of the readers quoted in one way or the other said that violence is wrong, but the victims deserve what they get. One even went so far as to say that public officials “might get it clear that they are our servants” if more people showed up at public forums with guns!
The veneer of civilization is apparently much thinner than I had previously believed.
