LAWSUIT: We must rein in overly generous tort system

CHARLES CRIPPS; Gig Harbor

The recent news over the lawsuit filed against a virtually bankrupt public treasury focused mainly on greed by the deceased officers’ families. Not mentioned was probable encouragement by that element of trial lawyers who would also benefit from a liberal jury decision.

Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor once said that the flaws in our generous tort law system allows many trial lawyers to become overnight millionaires. As long as Congress and our state Legislature lack the nerve to make the necessary changes, many worthy programs that lack funding will continue to suffer.

Taxpayers should not be held responsible because we do not have infallible people making decisions for us.
