Gov. Chris Gregoire plans to sign the petition for a state income tax initiative – but she’s not quite sure if she’ll vote for it yet.
Initiative 1077 would tax the income of wealthier Washingtonians. Supporters need to collect more than 240,000 petition signatures by July 2 to get on the November ballot.
The Democratic governor said Friday that she plans to sign the I-1077 petition, because she thinks Washington should have a good debate about it.
She won’t commit to full support yet – but suspects she’ll wind up as a supporter, because it would provide more money for education.
I-1077 would tax income over $200,000 per year for individuals, or $400,000 for couples. It would also shrink the state property tax and give small businesses some tax relief.
