  Back to school brings many opportunities

  November is upon us already, and it seems like only yesterday that we were welcoming the incoming class for the 2011-12 school year. The truth is, these are some of the busiest times of the year and also the time when we get to acknowledge the hard work of our staff, students and school community. November brings the first of our school-wide programs, musical performances and student conferences. It is a time when we will celebrate our veterans and the amazing sacrifices they make each day. It is also the time when we begin to reflect on the opening of our schools and the success we had in our programs. The Puyallup School District was proud to announce that three of our schools in improvement had made the progress necessary to remove that title. We learned that five of our schools had been named Washington State Schools of Distinction, an award given to schools that show continual instructional growth during a five-year period.   The sooner students are ready for college, the better

  From January through March of this past school year, every sixth grade student in the Puyallup School District had the opportunity to visit the University of Puget Sound campus as part of the College Readiness Program. The program is the culminating event for sixth-graders as they enter the stage in their life when career aspirations begin to take shape. The college-readiness emphasis is based on our belief that, in order to make informed decisions about the future, our students must be allowed to experience what it means to be prepared for college. The program focuses on two simple principles. The first is that every child has the right to be prepared to attend college. Our use of the word “college” includes technical colleges, military academies, trade school and two-year institutions, as well as four-year universities big and small. Being prepared means that, as they leave us, they have a firm foundation to stand on as they apply for those

  PASCO -- Pasco School District's Migrant and Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee's annual conference will be from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

  The Parent Advisory Committee supports the district's mission by facilitating the input of parents of children enrolled in the migrant and/or bilingual programs.

  The conference is organized by parents for parents, and informative sessions are presented in Spanish.
