  Susan Williamson, principal at Taft Elementary in Boise has won the 2011 National Distinguished Principal Award for the state of Idaho.

  The award recognizes outstanding elementary and middle school administrators. The award is given by the National Association of Elementary School Principals in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education.

  Representatives and students from the Boise district, as well as members of the school board and officials, including Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Luna, presented Williamson with the award at a special school ceremony on Oct. 13.

  KENNEWICK -- Ralph LeCompte calls the Kennewick School District a blessing.

  The principal of the Catholic St. Joseph's School in Kennewick said that while his school provides an excellent education to its students, it needs public schools to meet all the educational or co-curricular activities some students or families want or need.

  His middle school students who want to participate in track and field in the spring or football in the fall play for nearby Park Middle School. Students with special needs go to one of several nearby public schools for part of the school day to receive services.

  Three Whatcom County schools - Wade King Elementary, Blaine Middle and Nooksack Valley High schools - are 2011 School of Distinction Award winners.

  The annual award recognizes schools that have made large improvements in student achievement. Across the state, 99 schools received the honor this year, the fifth time the awards have been given out.

  Awardees are chosen based on looking at data from the state standardized tests over the last five years. The schools with the largest gains in all subjects are honored.
