The South Sound boasts some of the top high schools in the country, according to Newsweek magazine.

The South Sound boasts some of the top high schools in the country, according to Newsweek magazine.

The magazine based its list of the best schools on how hard schools work to challenge students with advanced placement college-level courses and tests. Just over 1,600 schools – 6 percent of all the public schools in the U.S. – made the list.

The list included Federal Way High School, Thomas Jefferson High School, Peninsula High School, Emerald Ridge High School and Graham-Kapowsin High School. To learn more, go to www.newsweek.com/feature/ 2010/americas-best-high-schools.html.

2 Tri-City high schools recognized as innovators

RICHLAND -- New Horizons High School in Pasco and Delta High School in Richland were named Washington State Innovative Schools by state Superintendent Randy Dorn on Friday.

The designation goes to schools that use creative educational ideas, restructure school operations, have active community involvement and promote hands-on learning.

Forty-two schools applied for the designation and 22 were accepted.
